Comedy Fantasy Author Keeps Plugging Her Book Even As She Questions Its Very Existence
My name is Shy MacShannon and I am a (soon-to-be published) Fantasy Comedy author. I’m currently working on my debut Chuck the Chosen, a comedic fantasy about a 34-year-old guy who just wants to know if this whole chosen thing comes with any benefits, like a pay cheque perhaps.
Update, More Like a Downdate, Amiright? (Hahaha, help me)
I’m being dramatic and I know it. The truth is, and I’ve said this before, but this is all apart of the process. You can do research until you’re blue in the face on how all these other authors have written their books but it doesn’t really matter if that method doesn’t work for you.
With that being said, I technically don’t have a word count update. Why? Well, because I’ve went back to the drawing board. It’s daunting and scary, because I don’t want to fall off schedule. But this book deserves to be the best I can make it, which means putting in the right kind of time and effort to make that possible.
Now, as you can tell by the title, I bought a printer (Oh brother!!! No, actually, that’s the brand) and the reason I did this was so I could start printing out drafts. I realized having two drafts open at the same time on my computer wasn’t making the story any better. Sure, I’ve upped my word count and some of the storyline was going in a better direction, but I was still stuck at the exact same spot I was in the first draft.
Google helped me…I don’t have a googling addiction, I swear.
I read that after a brief break from your manuscript, you should do a read through, noting any issues and then create a whole new outline before starting in on a new draft. So, that’s what we’re trying.
The funny thing is, this is kind of how I write short stories, so I’m not sure why I decided novel work needed to be any different. I don’t do an outline (my natural state of being is a panster so I’m going against the grain pretty often here) but I write my first draft…and then just keep reading and tweaking until that funny little gut instinct tells me to stop.
I’m currently on chapter 2 *sigh* but a read through will hopefully give me a better understanding of the characters and the overall point of the book. I feel pretty good about the humor and I think the characters themselves are spot on, but the motivations behind their actions isn’t quiet there yet.
I’m going to finish this book! I’m going to be a Fantasy Comedy Author!

See, look, I made notes, I’m working! You can’t see all the notes though, gotta keep some of those cards hidden.
Baby steps!!!
If you want to check out the rest of my journey to becoming a published author, you can start from the beginning here (You’ll find out this isn’t the first book I planned on being my debut…all apart of the process I guess!)
Did You Just Ask What I’m Reading? No? I’m Going to Tell You Anyways!
I’ve paused on DCC…I just needed a break! Listen, I’m not someone who typically reads an entire series all the way through, okay! It’s just not who I am, and that’s okay!
I’m reading “Everyone on This Train is a Suspect” by Benjamin Stevenson. So far its doing exactly what Stevenson’s books do for me which is just be comfortable. I know his stuff is murder mystery and that arguably shouldn’t be a comfort read for me but if you try the series you’ll understand.
There’s also a *dash* perhaps a *sprinkle* of romance in it which is *chef’s kiss*. Give me a side plot of romance for 100 please! Yes and thank you!
Oh, I also watched the new Anaconda movie…wouldn’t suggest it. AND watched The Housemaid…would suggest it!
Anyways, I’m going to stop using this as an excuse to not write.
Stay writing! Because wasn’t that the whole point of all this time you’re putting in and all the doubt and fear and love and passion, etc, etc. Yada, yada. 🫠
