To my Lily,

            I thought looking out the window of this plane we are on would help me write this. Yet, the view of what would have been your home is getting smaller.  I look over at you so I can remember your face. At some point in your life I hope that you’ll understand my decision. I know that the family you’re going to will give you all of the love you deserve. More than I could ever manage. I made sure of it.

I wish we could stay together.

Shameless Plug

This is a literary fiction short story I wrote for NYC Midnights 100-word challenge in 2024. It garnered me an honorable mention in the first round, giving me the confidence to continue working towards my goals of becoming an author. When I started the contest I remember wanting to try something different. Which is why I ended up writing a letter and making the daring choice to cross out some of the words. It could have backfired considering I was already limited in how much story I could tell with such a small word count but I’ve always enjoyed trying something new and unique even if I could potentially fail because of it…luckily it worked out this time.

For those of you who don’t know, my name is Shy MacShannon and I am a Canadian (soon-to-be published) author. I’m currently working on my debut novel titled Chuck the Chosen, a comedic fantasy about a 34-year-old guy who just wants to know if this whole chosen thing comes with any benefits, like a pay cheque perhaps.
