Comedy Writer Shamelessly Plugs…Her Book…

My name is Shy MacShannon and I am a Comedy Fantasy (soon-to-be published) author. I’m currently working on my debut Chuck the Chosen, a comedic fantasy about a 34-year-old guy who just wants to know if this whole chosen thing comes with any benefits, like a pay cheque perhaps.

Now The Update

I am now at 23,708!

Which means I still have to write 46,292…🫠

I really can’t tell you what delusional idea I had that mid-April was going to be doable. In my defense (though I’m not defensive, I swear) I am a Canadian and we’re only just starting to get some real-life sunshine so…I get to feel a little sluggish, it’s been like 6 months of cold.

The plus side is that I laughed at my manuscript yesterday. I’ve felt very disconnected from Chuck and his whole story lately so the fact that I found it funny is a good thing. It might also have something to do with the fact that Henry just announced he’s in love with Chuck’s Mom. Which is in fact canon. And a very funny plot point in the book if I do say so myself.

So what chapter am I on now?

Chapter 7! Which is titled “Why Do I Need to Know This Much About You, Henry?”

This title is subject to change. I’m just not sure how I feel about it honestly and I haven’t decided if it truly encapsulates the humor in this particular chapter. (There’s a sumo wrestler in a too-small mawashi at one point and I just feel like I’m missing an opportunity here by not putting that in the title somewhere).

While you’re waiting for me to actually publish this dang book, you could check out this comedy short story I wrote early 2024. It was actually one of the first writing contests I had participated in. It was so much fun and made me realize I enjoy writing humor. I guess this is was the beginning of my comedy fantasy author journey!

Author Resources I’ve Found

I will do a separate post delving into the different resources I’ve come across but I was excited to find this information. I can’t take credit though. There is a creator named Dale L. Roberts who has a YouTube/podcast called “The Self-Publishing with Dale Podcast”. The entire channel is dedicated to information on the industry and how it is rapidly changing.

In one of his latest videos (linked here) he talked about a site called novel report. This site helps indie authors ensure their marketing data is as accurate and useful as possible while being relatively affordable. Dale also discussed Publisher Rocket, another useful tool for authors relating to SEO but is on the pricier side.

He also brought up book award pro which allows indie authors to send in their work to potentially win awards for them!

Anyways! That’s it for now. I need to get back to Chuck before he strangles Henry!
