Today I felt myself hit my stride.

I wrote over 1000 words, which isn’t typical for me, and it means tomorrow will be much easier to hit my goal. This way if it’s a tough day and the words aren’t wording, I’ll be covered. Collateral writing is what we’ll call it.

I told myself to finish the first draft by end of August, but I’d love nothing more than to be starting in on draft 2 come August. It’ll be hard to accomplish, and I won’t kill myself to do it but if I can manage it…it’ll feel really awesome.

I’ve noticed I have issues with pacing. I think I’m too quick to get to the “good parts” because it’s difficult to gauge whether a regular scene is necessary or simply filler…and really boring filler. I’ve listened to a lot of Brandon Sanderson’s podcast “Writing Excuses” and one of the episodes Brandon, Howard, and Dan gave some great advice.

If you’re bored writing it, the reader will be bored reading it.

After that, I started paying attention heavily to how I felt during the writing process. If I wasn’t having fun, something needed to change. If I wasn’t emotional at the emotional parts, I wasn’t creating enough depth within the scene.

Another great piece of advice from the podcast is to have a great opening line.

If anyone is reading this, perhaps you’d be willing to give me some feedback down in the comments. My current opening line is….

“We started as nothing.”

This is the opening line to the prologue because I’m one of those writers who believes whole heartedly in the usage of prologues and epilogues. You’ll have to stop me from writing altogether to take prologues away from me. I love them and they are here to stay.

Anyways…word counts!
